Teeth whitening or bleaching is a process that can be done in a dentist office or at home to remove stains from your teeth. Once the stains are removed, your teeth will be whiter and brighter. When you eat or drink certain foods your teeth can become stained and over time these stains can build up on both inside and outside of the tooth. It does not matter how often you brush your teeth because stains will still get on your teeth.
If you want a simple do-it-yourself kit, you can find them at your local pharmacy or department store. If you want to have a more aggressive treatment than you get with a home whitening kit, then you will need to make an appointment for your dentist to do the procedure.
The teeth whitening gel will be made of either carbamide or hydrogen peroxide. When the teeth whitening gel is put on your teeth the peroxide in the gel will break down into molecules. The molecules will go straight inside your teeth to break down stains that are sitting inside the pores of your tooth enamel.
In actuality, these stains on your teeth lets less light shine through your teeth and makes them look dull. When you use the teeth whitening procedure the stains start to break apart and create less of a blockage so the light can shine through. This is why your teeth look so bright and white after a teeth whitening procedure.
Teeth that have a yellow or mild brown stain are usually caused by tobacco, coffee, or some foods. The tooth whitening procedure that works best for these types of stains is bleaching. Some medications taken during the tooth development stage will give you blue-gray or brown stains, which are harder to get rid of. With these types of stains it can take at least six months of bleaching treatments to get rid of them.
If you have the tooth whitening procedure done at the dentist office the visit can take from one to two hours. You can also do teeth whitening procedures at home, which can be supervised by your dentist. The dentist will make a special mouthpiece to fit your bottom and top teeth so you can do the procedure at home. They will also provide the teeth whitening gel, but it is not as strong as what you would get if the dentist does it. Doing it at home can take as long as three weeks to see results.
